This is the object of intense interest to our guests. Lance is a Maine Coon Cat, he's a polydactyl, which means he has 26 toes, 6 on his front paws and 7 on his back paws. He looks like a small Bobcat. Maine Coon Cats are the largest domestic breed of cat in the world. Although he dislikes being barked at, he is not at all afraid of dogs. In fact, he adores several of our guests and the feeling appears to be mutual. Keeper, for example, likes to pet Lance the Cat with his paw. Which the Lance let's him do. He did cause his share of mischief though. When we first started boarding dogs, he would sneak up in the middle of the night and whack some poor sound asleep guest on his bum. When we would hear "Yipe! Yipe! Woof! Woof!" in the middle of the night, we knew there had been a cat assault. Strangely, he tended to only do this to dogs he liked. We quickly figured out that he could only wake an unsuspecting guest if it was pitch black. He was using his superior cat night vision to carry out the assaults. We quickly installed a few dimmer switches and left just enough light on so our guests could sleep but not be rudely awakened by a stealthy cat assault.
When Lance and Keeway were much younger, he would sneak up on Keeway all the time. Keeway is one very smart Labrador, so he quickly learned to curl up under a heavy quilt every night before bed. Then when Lance whacked him on the bum, he was fully protected and would just roll over and give Lance a big, but sleepy WOOF! - which was enough to send Lance running. Maine Coon Cats are known for their magnificent fur, their enormous size and their resemblance to small mountain lions. They are not, however, known for their innate intelligence.
